Wetlands purify our water, reduce flooding and storm damage, and are among the most biodiverse habitats on Earth. More than 40% of the world’s species live or breed in wetlands, yet we have lost an estimated 87% of the world’s wetlands over the past few centuries and more than half of the wetlands that once covered the United States. More than ever, we need people to get out into these remarkable places, learn to read the landscape, recognize the species that depend on it, and understand why they matter. Our workshops do just that. Whether you’re building a career in conservation or simply want to become a better naturalist, our workshops combine rigorous science with hands-on field experience under the guidance of experienced biologists.
Find The Line is a 40-hour training in wetland identification and delineation based on the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Wetland Delineation Manual and applicable Regional Supplements. Designed for conservation professionals, students, land managers, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of wetland identification, the course combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on field experience.
Participants will learn to identify wetland indicators, examine soils, recognize hydrology, classify vegetation communities, collect field data, and apply the three-parameter approach to determining wetland boundaries.
Wetlands support an extraordinary diversity of life, from aquatic insects and frogs to turtles, snakes, and birds. Wetland Wildlife is an opportunity to get out into these habitats and experience that diversity firsthand.
This two-day, hands-on course introduces participants to the wildlife that depend on wetlands and the methods biologists use to study them. Working in the field, participants will become familiar with standard survey techniques for aquatic insects, reptiles and amphibians, and birds while learning about the species themselves.
We'll explore life histories, ecological relationships, bioindicators, and the ways wildlife can help us understand the health and conservation value of wetland ecosystems.
